Safe coexistence

61_2

Safe coexistence with brown bears is more than possible in the 21st century. To achieve that, however, it is mandatory for local communities around their areas of habitation to become familiar with those forest dwellers’ habits and attitude, and to receive instruction for co-existence with it. Of particular importance is that awareness and preparation cover the period March through July, when the animals are most active in gathering food after a long hibernation.

Most of the damage and incidents involving bears are not due to any increase of their numbers but rather, to human intrusion into their habitats, which upsets bears by drastically shortening the ‘safe distance’, in clear violation of the so vital mutual respect between man and beast. Bear conduct is largely influenced by human behavior!
